Why it rots
Constant moisture and ground contact feed rot and insects, and unsealed wood absorbs water fast. Posts usually fail at the soil line first.
Prevention
Choose rot-resistant species or treated lumber, seal on install and re-seal periodically, and set posts in properly sized concrete footings above grade where possible.
Or skip the upkeep
Composite and vinyl give a similar look with no rot risk if maintenance isn't for you.
